Gardner

About Dudley:

Dudley Gardner Ph.D. has served on the State Parks and Cultural Resources Commission since March 2004. He also serves on the Wyoming Review Board for the National Registry of Historic Places, a position he has held since 1985. Currently he is a Professor at Western Wyoming Community College, a place that he has worked for since 1981. In addition to the current board positions he holds, Gardner has served on the Wyoming Council for the Humanities, chaired the Sweetwater County Centennial Committee, the Rock Springs Certified Local Government Board, and the Fort Bridger Historical Association. While in the position of Chairmen of the Fort Bridger Historical Association, the Historical Association received the International award of merit from the Society of Historical Archaeology for their commitment to the archaeology and preservation of Fort Bridger.

Dr. Gardner began his archaeological career in 1975 working on prehistoric sites. In 1981 he worked on his first historical archeological site and has worked and published in both areas of archaeology ever since. Among the books growing out of this dual interest that he has published are Forgotten Frontier: A History of Wyoming Coal Mining (1989), Rock Springs Then and Now (1990), A Pictorial History of Sweetwater County (1993), Architecture of the Ancient Ones (1995), and six chapters in The Red Desert: A History of a Place (2010 Ed by Annie Proulx). In addition he has had several book chapters and articles published since 1981; the most recent is a submittal to the University of Utah on prehistoric agriculture in northwest Colorado. He also has finished a manuscript on the "history of the Chinese in Wyoming." His research interests have led him to conducting research and excavations in the summer. The focus, like his focus in Wyoming and Colorado, is on the Formative Period and Chinese settlements around the Pacific; he has conducted or worked on excavations in New Zealand, Fiji, and Easter Island. For the last three summers he has worked for a Yale University research team in Mongolia. Here the team is researching the Formative Period on the Russian Mongolian border.

Gardner was born in Colorado, and after graduating from Ranum High School he served two tours of duty in Vietnam then went back east to study at Lee University where he earned his BA. Returning to Colorado he worked for the Archaeology Program at Colorado State University beginning in 1978 and earned his MA in 1980. In 1981 he was hired by Western Wyoming Community College as their staff Historical Archaeologist and transitioned to full time teaching and research in 1990. He became the Division Chair for the Social Science Fine Arts Department in 1994. In 2000 he earned his Ph.D. at the University of New Mexico.

Dudley, as most call him, loves two things: his children and the American West. His son, William Gardner, is a doctoral candidate at Yale University and his daughter, Emma Gardner, teaches third grade in Kona, Hawaii, where she has taught for three years. Her husband, Jason Perrot, served in the U.S. Infantry in Iraq and now is a nurse in Hawaii. His daughter-in-law, Stephanie Gries, is a speech pathologist who graduated with her MS from the University of Wyoming. Will and Stephanie have two children, Micah and Chloe. Micah (4) wants to move back to Wyoming, while Chloe (2) wants to stay in Connecticut where the family currently lives.

barbara

About Barbara:

Born to Wyoming natives who were also career Navy (36 1/2) years I lived all over the United States. A majority of those duty stations were with the Marines as dad was a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman.

Vacations were often spent in Wyoming and we lived in Wyoming for two years when dad was stationed overseas.

I graduated from Washington - Lee High School in Arlington VA and got a BA in Behavioral Science from National University in San Diego, CA. I met and married a Marine Aviator. After getting out of the Marines we moved to Los Angeles. He passed away while on a state department assignment in the middle east.

I moved back to Wyoming in 1994 and spent 10 years in county radio. From there I went to TV and then to the newspaper. Where I'm currently employed as a reporter and sales manager at the Big Horn County Newspapers.

My second husband Mark Reno and I married in 2003. We live outside of Basin on a farm/ranch. Right now we just raise hay.

In addition to this board I am also on many boards and committees including: The Wyoming Lifeline, Big Horn County Library, Bighorn Basin Outdoor Recreation Collaborative, Camp Bethel, South Big Horn County Senior Center, Big Horn County Fire District #2, Big Horn County Art Guild, Town of Basin Activities Committee and in my spare time run the Basin Area Chamber and an animal rescue called "Felines and Friends of Wyoming".

SuePeters

About Sue:

Sue was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in the community of Crystal Lake, Illinois located approximately 45 miles northwest of Chicago where she graduated from Crystal Lake Community High School in 1961. Upon graduation, her choices were: marriage, college or secretarial school. She was not ready to marry and college wasn’t of high interest so she opted for the top secretarial school in Chicago and graduated from that school in 1962. She said “My dad always told me you have to have something to fall back on” so a diploma from the best secretarial school in Chicago seemed to fill that bill and has served her well. She says she still takes and uses shorthand to this day! With that diploma in hand, she moved to Palm Springs, California where she spent the next 27 years with a majority of those 27 years in the general construction industry and a short time in the legal field. In 1989 Sue left California and moved to Pinedale, Wyoming where she married her husband Ed. She and Ed moved to Riverton in 1990 and they continue to reside in Riverton. She kept her California Contractor’s License on the inactive status until 1999 when she retired that license for good. Over the years, in both Palm Springs and Riverton, there have been numerous and varied general interest classes at College of the Desert and Central Wyoming College.

Sue always had a love of horses but never had any desire to raise or train horses or compete until she was bitten by the cutting horse bug in 1980. Bitten by that bug, she owned, showed and judged cutting horses and cutting horse shows for many years all over the country and perhaps judged the majority of high school rodeo cutting horse shows throughout the state of Wyoming. She retired from that when she and her husband Ed opened two retail stores in 1993 and 1995, one in Riverton and one in Lander. They maintained those stores until 2006. Since retiring those stores in 2006, she travels at least twice yearly to Palm Springs to help her son in his catering business.

Sue has one son, Scott, who was born and raised in Palm Springs and who is a Certified Executive Chef and the “caterer of choice” in The Desert. Ed has two daughters, Kim and Suzi, both living in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Sue and Ed have four grandchildren and one great grandson.

She laughs when she says there was very little time for community endeavors while in Palm Springs so upon moving to Wyoming and Riverton she made up for that lost time. She has been a board member of the Riverton Rendezvous committee for 19 years, a past president of the Riverton Country Club Ladies Golf Association, member of the Riverton Downtowners and the Riverton Main Street Reconstruction project, a Rotarian and secretary of Rotary, a Kiwanian, board member of the Lander Chamber of Commerce, board member and secretary of the Wind River Visitor’s Council for six years, secretary of the Wyoming Cutting Horse Association, NCHA cutting horse judge, member of the Bronze Committee of Lander, and secretary of Mountain View Water District. In addition, she plans to do some travel writing and photography and, lastly, she holds a private pilot’s license with a multi and single engine land rating. She and Ed are outdoor enthusiasts being hunters and fishermen and both are past trap and skeet shooters. They also enjoy RV and ATV activities.

Sue was appointed to State Parks and Cultural Resources Commission in 2015 by Governor Matt Mead.

David-Bassett3

About David:

David S Bassett has lived on both sides of the state of Wyoming.  In the early 80’s David and his wife Deborah moved to the Cheyenne area as their place of residence right after their wedding.  They moved back to Wyoming to the far southwest side of the state to Evanston.

David enjoyed the opportunity to serve our country in the United States Air Force.  He received an honorable discharge.  In recent years, it was a privilege to serve on the Wyoming Veterans Commission.

He worked for many years in Natural Resources in a variety of capacities.  Upon his retirement from the natural resource career field, his wife informed him that he was too young to retire and that he needed to secure other employment (find a new job.)  He crossed over to Human Resources and continued his career in Job Services.  His wife didn’t want him under foot at home.

Over the years, he has had the opportunity to serve on numerous boards and commissions in a variety of capacities. These opportunities included church, school, economic development, chambers, nonprofits in various states and communities in which they lived.

We have two adult children; our son and his wife live in Washington and our daughter and her family live in Texas.

In 2015 David and Deborah, and a group of friends put together a nonprofit foundation to provide travel assistance to Uinta County cancer patients who travel back and forth to the Wasatch front for treatment.   This is an on-going endeavor.

David considers it a great opportunity and privilege to serve on the State Parks and Cultural Resources Commission.

IMG0021

About Kenneth:

A second generation Wyoming citizen, I was born and raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Graduated from Central High School in 1963 and went on to the University of Wyoming where I received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1969. Graduation returned me to Cheyenne where I rejoined the family construction business. After 39 years in the industry retirement seemed like a new challenge. I've been privileged to serve on numerous professional boards and enjoyed membership in various community service organizations. Also, I've enjoyed being a Volunteer for Cheyenne Frontier Days for 53 years serving as General Chairman for three years. Served, in the past, on the Cheyenne Regional Airport Board for ten years, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and as the Military Affairs Committee Chairman.

Love to travel and I still struggle at golf.......
